Cities That Have Hosted the Olympics
The United States has hosted the most Olympic games of any country, while London has hosted the most Olympic games of any city.
The inaugural Summer Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, from April 6 to April 15, 1896. Since then, the event has been staged every four years, with the exception of 1916, 1940, and 1944, when it was canceled owing to World War I. In 1924, the inaugural Winter Olympics were staged in Chamonix, France. Due to World War II, the winter events in 1940 and 1944 were canceled. Summer and Winter Olympics were held in the same year until the International Olympic Committee decided to separate the games by having the Winter Olympics in 1992 and 1994 to alternate even years.
Cities That Have Hosted The Olympics
The United States has hosted the most Olympic games of any country, with four Summer Olympic games and four Winter Olympic games. With three Summer Olympics, London holds the record for the most events hosted in a single city. Europe has held 30 events, including 14 Winter Olympics and 16 Summer Olympics, while Africa will hold its first Youth Olympics in 2022 in Dakar, Senegal. London hosted the Summer Olympics in 1908, 1948, and 2012. It was also scheduled to host the 1944 Olympics, but the event was canceled owing to World War II. Two events were held in Paris (1900, 1924), Los Angeles (1932, 1984), and Athens (1896, 2004). Two Winter Olympics have been held at Innsbruck (1964, 1976), St Moritz (1928, 1948), and Lake Placid (1932, 1980).
